Seeing You Through To A Full Recovery
The attentive staff of Brunswick Surgery Center will continue monitoring you once your surgery is over. We will be by your side as you begin your recovery and as any anesthesia slowly wears off. Controlling your pain is of utmost importance, so your nurse will ask you to rate your pain on a scale of 0-10. It will be very important that you communicate how you are feeling and whether you are experiencing any side effects. The staff will also introduce alternative means of pain control, including heat, cold, elevation and relaxation techniques. We will escort any waiting friends and family to a private post-op conference room when your surgeon is ready to speak with them. When your surgery is complete, we will notify any waiting family and friends. Your surgeon will speak with them in one of our private post-surgical conference rooms.
Preparing For Discharge
Before you are released, we will be certain you and your caregiver know what to expect and what you need to do during your recovery. Your nurse will cover pain management and discharge instructions specific to you and your procedure. You will also receive a package of instructions so you and your caregiver will have the information handy while you are recovering at home.
Within the first 24 hours after surgery:
- Do not drive. Your driver should drive you from Brunswick Surgery Center, and you should not drive for at least 24 hours or as instructed by your physician.
- Have an adult stay with you who is capable of providing care for the first 24 hours. If you need further assistance or care post surgery, please discuss any concerns with your surgery scheduler.
- Limit your activity. Do not do manual labor, nor operate machinery or equipment.
- Do not sign important papers or make binding decisions.
- Take your medications. When taken as prescribed, pain medications are safe and effective. If you have concerns or side effects, please call your doctor right away.
- Take steps to prevent infection.
- You and your caregivers must wash your hands before touching your dressing or surgical site.
- Ask any visitors, including family members, to wash their hands before and after coming to see you.
- If you see any signs of infection, call your surgeon right away. Signs of infection may include fever, swelling, redness, heat or pain at the surgical site or cloudy fluid drainage.
- Should the surgical wound open, please call your surgeon.
